“The Power of The Lord”

In Luke chapter 5 and verse 17b we read about how the power of the Lord was present for Jesus to heal the sick. Two questions immediately spring to mind, the first being, does this ability to discern and minister the power of the Lord to heal, apply to us? And the second being, does this apply to HIV/AIDS?

The theologically derived answers to both of these questions is a simple ‘yes’. This answer is dependent totally upon the definition of the word ‘us’. Who are the ‘us’? In Acts chapter 19 and verses 16, we obtain a clear definition as to the ‘us’. They are those, and only those, who are spiritually known to be believers in Jesus, in his divinity, in his humanity, in his death and in his resurrection and in the certainty of his coming again - ie those who believe that ‘Christ has died, Christ is risen and Christ will come again’. The theology is unambiguously clear, but what about experience and practice?

Have believers today, all 1 billion of us, discerned the power of the Lord being present to heal? The answer is clearly yes and there is a cloud of witnesses alive today to attest to seeing/discerning the power of the presence of the Lord to heal. You and we are amongst this cloud. But have believers today then applied that power to heal others. Again the answer is yes and again we can testify personally to seeing the miraculous healing of the Lord come about.

But now we come to the big question. What about HIV/AIDS? We and our then team, have personally cared for, through to death, 360 terminally ill people in central London during the 1990's, most of whom were HIV positive. Clearly, they were not physically healed as we would have wished and hoped.

However, we can testify to remarkable reductions in opportunistic infections within many of that group. But there is more. There are today a number of people who, whilst still HIV positive, are alive and well and that this situation prevailed prior to the advent of anti retrovirals and is, we believe, a consequence of prayer and the power of the Lord being present to heal.

Are we being naive - in worldly terms, almost certainly. In Kingdom terms, no, we are bound to give the glory to God and acknowledge that He has moved in his power.

We are writing these things to give encouragement that when we believe in Jesus, the impossible does become possible. We are writing these things to encourage Christians, when discerning the power of the Lord to heal, to stand upon the realities of their faith and to pray and to heal the sick including those who are HIV positive.

I wish to take us further however. It would seem to make much more sense that God wants us to stop getting sick in the first place rather than have to do individual miracles for each sick person. You see, the power of the Lord is present to heal all illness, including the illnesses of our total societies. We live in a sin sick world and it is as a consequence of that, that as a people, we fall into life styles that put us at risk of HIV/AIDS. We are a fallen, ‘sin sick society’ yet the wonderful thing is that the Lord’s power is present to heal even a sin sick society. It is crucial that we recognise this, that as the ‘us’, the believers in Jesus, we discern and minister His power to heal society itself.

Let me put it this way, over 40 million people are physically living with HIV. But there are some 6.8 billion people who belong to our global sin sick society who are at risk of becoming HIV positive. If both India and China move to South African or Botswanan levels of prevalence, then we are likely to see half a billion HIV positive people. Prevention of the non infected from becoming infected is essential and urgent. Surprisingly, we as Christians, have the answer. The power of the Lord is present to heal society, we have only to stand upon our own personal faith and to pass on and minister the life giving message of Jesus; that belief in Jesus changes our behaviour so radically that from that moment on, we no longer live life styles that put us at risk of HIV / AIDS. We have a simple message.

Live the Kingdom,

Preach the Kingdom,

Teach the Kingdom of Jesus.

End Note
One of the more striking themes in our Scriptures is that of the ‘power of God’. It is an alive, vibrant, creative and life changing power. There is no doubt that our God is an active God, a doing God (Psalm 115.3), a God, who through his love for each one of his people, is prepared to make his power available to us to change our world (Psalm 138.3). And then there is the power of the word of God, just look at the passage in Isaiah chapter 55 verse 11.

“so is my word that goes out from my mouth.
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it”

We encourage you, as Christians, as people of the light, as intercessors, to

‘Fan into flame the gift of God which is in you .... for God does not give us a spirit of timidity,
but a spirit of power, of love and of self discipline
(2 Timothy 1.6-7)

We are convinced that if we will stand on the promises of our faith in Jesus, so we will discern when the power of the Lord is available to us to heal our world and to heal our sick, and so we will spread the Gospel message as Jesus commanded us to, and so we will see the transforming power of God released within our nations.
